The Hopwood Decisjon resulted from a 1996 U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals case that greatly limited the Texas universities' affirmative-action programs for admission of minority students. As a conseq uence. minority enrollment dropped significantly. One solution proposed was to accept all students in the top lOo/o of their graduating class. The success of such a plan in achieving d iversity would hinge on the enrollment rates for the different racial groups. The fol.lowing are the average numbers of freshmen in the top 10% of their classes admitted and enrolled, by race, at UT-Austin for the years 1990-1996.
